The female Prime Minister of India Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was born on 19th November 1917 in Allahabad. Indira’s father Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of India.

Indira was the only woman to hold the Prime Minister office and was also the second-longest serving PM of India.

Gandhi was known for her political ruthlessness and unprecedented centralization of power.

It was Rabindranath Tagore who named her Priyadarshini. After which her total name becomes as Indira Priyadarshini Nehru.

Gandhi discontinued her studies due to her and her mother’s ill health. Got an admission in University of Oxford but always misses her grade in the important language Latin.

Later in 2010, after her death the University of Oxford has awarded an honorary degree.

Indira Gandhi, while her stay at Britain met her boyfriend Feroze Gandhi and married him according to Hindu rituals. Feroze Gandhi died due to heart attack in 1960 after 18 years of their marriage. The couple had two son’s named Rajiv and Sanjay Gandhi. Indira had chosen Sanjay as her next political leader but after his demise she decides to see Rajiv in that place.

After her father demise she was elected as the President of Congress Party and also appointed as the member of Rajya Sabha.

The last speech given by Indira Gandhi was at Orissa on 30 October 1984 at the then Parade Ground in front of eth secretariat of Orissa. After her death as a symbol of her last speech the Parade ground was named as Indira Gandhi Park.

On 31 October, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh who are the bodyguards of Indira Gandhi shot her death.  She was cremated on 3 November near Raj Ghat which is now called as Shakti Sthala.

Indira Gandhi was awarded with the highest civilian award named Bharat Ratna. Indira Awaas Yojana house development scheme for poor was spotlighted after her. Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi is because of her honour. The largest Open University in the world Indira Gandhi National Open University was named after her.
