Rahul Gandhi appeared before a local court in Bhiwandi on Friday in connection with a criminal defamation case against the leader. Emerging out of the court, the Congress vice president said, “When I make a commitment, I fulfill it.” Earlier this week, the Supreme Court had exempted the Congress leader from making a personal appearance in the court in Maharashtra. Bhiwandi is located on the outskirts of Mumbai. A local Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ( RSS) officer bearer had filed a criminal defamation case against Gandhi after the latter blamed the RSS for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The complainant in his plaint had alleged that Gandhi had tarnished the reputation of the Sangh through his speech. The alleged remarks were made by him while campaigning for assembly elections in 2014. While the leader has arrived in Mumbai on Friday morning and a tweet from his handle @officeof RG read, “RG will be in Bhiwandi this morning to honour commitment to the trial court,” however, the local police had said they were not sure if he was coming.
