The Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) rally at Jantar Mantar to protest the Land Acquisition Bill took a tragic turn on Wednesday when a farmer from Dausa district in Rajasthan committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree. The man was in distress due to crop loss and it forced him to take his life. The death, however, grabbed headlines amid suspicion that the deceased may not have intended to commit suicide and may have accidentally killed himself. The death of 40-year-old Gajendra Singh Rathore sparked a bitter war of words between different political parties because even after the farmer was brought down from the tree and rushed to the hospital, AAP decided to continue with the rally. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal delivered his speech and launched a vicious attack on Delhi Police on the spot for not saving Gajendra despite repeated pleas by AAP leaders and volunteers. Kejriwal claimed that Gajendra was not rescued because the Delhi Police was not under the state government. After completing his speech, Kejriwal and deputy CM Manish Sisodia went to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital but by that time Gajendra had already been declared dead. Singh had climbed the tree just before 12.30pm and he was being brought down after an hour. The police found a suicide note in his pocket which stated that his crops had been ruined and he was thrown out of his house by his father. Gajendra ended the plea asking the people to tell him how he could return home. Menawhile, Delhi Police has registered an FIR invoking the charges of abetment (306 IPC) and causing death due to accident (304A). The section related to obstructing policemen and public servants (186 IPC) has also been incorporated in the FIR. An inquiry has been ordered Delhi Police and a report has been sent to the home ministry as well.
