Encounter specialist Police Sub-Inspector Daya Nayak was re-instated in Mumbai Police after he was suspended for the second time in July last year. The sub-inspector from the 1995 batch has to his credit over 80 encounters of gangsters like Vinod Matkar, Rafiq Dabba, Sadik Kalia, as well as three Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists.
He was first suspended in January 2006, while he was being investigated for disproportionate assets by the state Anti-Corruption Bureau. This suspension lasted over six years, until he was reinstated in June 2012.
The second suspension took place in July 2015, after he refused transfer orders to Nagpur, citing security reasons. He was suspended by the then Director General of Police Sanjeev Dayal for this. The current Director General of Police Pravin Dixit confirmed yesterday, “We have reinstated Nayak.”
Nayak had been lying low since the disproportionate assets controversy in which he was cleared by then DGP S S Virk citing lack of evidence. However, he had been lobbying heavily to return to the force. Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmad Javed will soon decide where in the city he will be posted.
